Voted one of the Best Summer Camps 2017 by Northern Virginia Magazine, FONZ Nature Camp brings youth in touch with nature through hands-on experiences exploring the outdoors.
Located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, FONZ Nature Camp provides students from 5th to 10th grade the opportunity to explore the great outdoors, and learn about local and global conservation through exposure to cutting edge research at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI). Through daily morning hikes along the Appalachian Trail, or through sections of the Shenandoah National and River State Parks, we teach our campers how to identify local plants and animals and monitor biodiversity. In the afternoon our campers get to see conservation science in action with campus tours and lectures from Smithsonian scientists and zookeepers. The direct interaction with these world-renowned science leaders and visual encounters with endangered species offers unique insight into the importance of global ecology and sustainability.
Our goal is to fill our campers with an appreciation and love for animals, nature, and our precious natural resources. We want them to leave camp inspired to take action, awakened to future science-related career paths, and empowered to make a difference within their community and the world.
