From a Vet Set Go member: "I have gained hands on experience by volunteering time at Mercy Animal Hospital. During my time at the vet practice I was able to watch Dr. McKim perform a femur repair on a Golden Retriever by using medical zip ties and stabilizing the broken bone with a rod. We also had to obtain x-rays to make sure the rod was in the correct place.
Also during my volunteering there were many animals that came in for spaying and neutering. During this time I learned how to intubate a dog and how to monitor the level of anesthesia.
I also got to perform well dog checks. One of the patient’s was a puppy who received his third round of puppy vaccines. Dr. McKim administered the injections and he allowed me to give the oral vaccines. Dr. McKim taught me a great deal about the importance of routine vaccines.
I also learned the importance of dental hygiene for K9s. The vet allowed me to assist with dental care on a Cocker Spaniel. I was able to use the scaler to remove the tarter."
